En lo profundo de la Sierra Nevada de Santa Marta, entre senderos que conectan veredas como Calabazo, La Lisa, Los Limones y Boquerón, hay un lugar donde la historia no se quedó en el pasado: Bunkuany, un sitio arqueológico que data aproximadamente del siglo VII d.C.

Itinerary: A Journey Through History, Landscape, and Connection

Welcome to the Heart of the World…

Day 1: Santa Marta to Bunkuany and overnight stay in a Kogui village

The Experience It starts early, at 7:00 a.m., with a 4x4 ride from Santa Marta to Bonda, where the trail takes us on a journey through the history of the region.

During the tour, we make stops at sites of cultural significance, such as a an old chapel, an indigenous monument, and the Donama stones, a place of great spiritual significance.

From the We started in the La Bodeguita neighborhood An uphill hike of about 30 minutes to an elevation of 950 meters above sea level. From this point, views open up toward Santa Marta, El Morro, and areas such as Punta Betín, as well as toward the village of Calabazo and the mountains of the Tayrona National Natural Park.

Then we descend for about two hours along trails that wind through forests, farms, and organic fields, crossing streams and areas with ancient trees, on a tour that allows visitors to connect with the region's biodiversity.

Between 10:45 a.m. and 11:00 a.m., we arrived at Bunkuany, where we explored terraces, stone walls, and offering sites which still hold significance for the indigenous communities of the Sierra.

We'll also enjoy a local lunch in a natural setting, surrounded by greenery and with views of the mountains of the Tayrona Park.

In the afternoon, we continued with a hike of approximately 4 km downhill, crossing farms where, depending on the season, you can pick and taste local fruits.

Once we arrive in the Río Piedras Basin, we’ll have a chance to enjoy a drink, and then we’ll be driven in local vehicles along open roads through lush vegetation to the Kogui indigenous village, where we’ll spend the night.

The day is going We wrapped up the evening with dinner, a brief welcome around the fire from a local Kogui member, and a well-deserved rest after this tour.

Day 2: Dawn in the Kogui Indigenous Village and Return to Santa Marta

If you want to watch the sunrise, you'll need to take a short hike up to a lookout point at around 5:00 a.m.

The day begins around 8:00 a.m. with breakfast prepared by local residents.

For today's activities, We will be welcomed by aAn Indigenous guide, who will accompany us throughout the tour, sharing knowledge about their culture, the use of medicinal plants, their social organization, how they inhabit the territory, and their daily activities, such as the harvesting of fique and its traditional washing process.

Subsequently, We had lunch together in a community space, featuring local products grown in the area.

After lunch, we began our journey back to the village of Calabazo.

From there, we took the return trip to Santa Marta, wrapping up the experience with a new understanding of the region and the cultures that call it home.

  • Bring a small hiking backpack (40 to 60 liters) with everything you need for the hike
  • You can leave the rest of your luggage at your hotel in Santa Marta or with the tour operator
  • Wear comfortable, lightweight, quick-drying clothing
  • Wear proper hiking shoes
  • Don't forget your swimsuit, in case you want to enjoy the water features along the way
