Traveling to the far north of Colombia means venturing into a landscape where the desert meets the Caribbean Sea. The following are located in the Alta Guajira: Punta Gallinas and Cape Vela, two iconic regions in the department of La Guajira.

This experience of 2 days and 1 night, departing from Riohacha, is a 4×4 trek along unpaved roads that wind through arid landscapes, natural salt flats, coastal dunes, and Wayuu communities that inhabit this ancestral territory.

We're not talking about “pristine beaches” here”, but rather of open desert coasts, with basic infrastructure and community dynamics of their own. They are remote places, exposed to the constant wind and the force of the sea, where The horizon dominates the landscape and the territory sets the pace.

Punta Gallinas, recognized as the northernmost point of mainland South America, offers sweeping views from its lighthouse and the dune formations that slope down toward the sea. Cape Vela, for its part, is a a place of cultural and spiritual significance for the Wayuu people, as well as a place perfect for watching the sunset facing the Caribbean.

Travel Itinerary

Day 1 | Punta Gallinas and the Taroa Dunes.

  • 5:30 a.m. – Departure from Riohacha
    Meet up and depart by 4×4 vehicle heading north toward La Guajira.
  • Uribia – Colombia's Indigenous Capital
    A brief stop at Uribia, territory of the Wayuu people.
  • Bahía Hondita – 12:00 PM
    Arrival at Bahia Hondita.
    A typical local lunch by the sea and some time to relax.
  • Dunes of Taroa
    A visit to the majestic Dunes of Taroa, where the desert meets the Caribbean Sea. A place to walk, take in the scenery, and take pictures.
  • Lighthouse of Punta Gallinas
    Climb to the Lighthouse of Punta Gallinas, one of the northernmost points in South America. It's the perfect spot to watch the sunset.
  • Accommodations at a local ranch
    Accommodations in traditional Wayuu lodgings (basic facilities appropriate to the region).
  • 7:30 PM – Dinner
    A traditional dinner and a rest under the starry desert sky.

Day 2 | Cabo de La Vela and the Manaure Salt Flats

  • 6:00 AM – Breakfast
    Traditional breakfast.
  • 6:30 a.m. – Departure for Cabo de La Vela

    Scenic stops to take in the contrasts between the desert landscape and the sea.
