In the easternmost part of Colombia, where the Amazon and the Orinoquía regions meet, rise the imposing Mavicure Hills, ancient rock formations that rise above the Inírida River and dominate the landscape of the department of Guainía. 

More than just isolated mountains, Mavicure is an ancestral territory inhabited by indigenous communities that have a deep spiritual and cultural connection to these hills. For them, they are not simply geological formations: They are Places of Memory, Origin, and Balance.

Detailed Itinerary for the Experience


Day 1 | From Inírida to Estrella Fluvial and arrival in Mavicure

The experience begins in Inírida, the department's capital. After meeting at the airport, We headed to the main pier to set sail..

During the day We will travel along the Inírida and Guaviare Rivers until you reach the call River Star of the East, a geographical point where the region's major river systems converge. As you navigate, you can observe the transition of landscapes from savannas to gallery forests and isolated rock formations.

After the Lunch in Amanavén (Vichada), we'll continue along the Atabapo River, known for the dark, crystal-clear hue of its waters. If conditions permit, we'll stop for a swim.

Late in the afternoon, we arrived in the Cerros de Mavecure area. Accommodations in local cabins. Dinner and an introductory discussion about the area and the next day's activities.

Estimated cumulative sailing time: Several hours (mainly spent on the river).

Day 2 | Hike up Cerro Mavicure and Caño San Joaquín

We set out before dawn. The Hike up Cerro Mavicure is done with a headlamp during the first section. The The hike is moderate, on a sloping, sun-exposed rocky surface.

The reward is a panoramic view of the Inírida River, the jungle, and the other nearby hills at sunrise

Descend with caution. After breakfast and a rest. 

In the afternoon, we sailed toward the Venado community. There we conducted a canoe trip down the Inírida River to Caño San Joaquín, known for his reddish hues and its seasonal aquatic vegetation.

I'll return to my lodging in the late afternoon. 

Physical difficulty for the day: moderate–high (challenging climb).

Day 3 | Local Communities, Honey, and Wild Cassava.

After breakfast, we set sail for the La Ceiba Community. There we'll learn about the Working with Melipona bees (native stingless bees), understanding its ecological and cultural significance.

We then continued on to the area known as La Laja de Lapa, an area where, during low-water season, white-sand beaches can form.

In the afternoon, we took part in the traditional process of transforming the spicy cassava, a staple food in the region. 

The following explains the Complete process: harvesting, grating, pressing, removal of toxic components, and production of products such as cassava bread and manioc.

The day ends with dinner and social gathering

This day fosters greater cultural interaction and understanding of daily life in the region.

Day 4 | Return to Inírida

Early breakfast and sail back to Inírida.

Depending on the flight schedule, You can make a quick stop at the local craft market before heading to the airport.

The third remaining deposit ($914.000) is due before the tour begins.

  • The The advance payment of $266,000 COP and $300,000 is non-refundable, since it guarantees your spot with the local communities and handles the logistics in the area.
  • You can give up your spot to someone else giving advance notice.
  • In the event of date changes, these will be evaluated based on the local operator's availability.

What should you bring to the Mavicure Hills?

The expedition to the Mavicure Hills It takes place in a humid, warm, and remote environment. Traveling light and with practical gear is key.

Essential Equipment

  • Headlamp (essential for the sunrise climb).

  • Rope gloves (required for the climb up Cerro Mavecure).

  • Reusable water bottle, thermos, or CamelBak.

  • Sunscreen (preferably natural) and lip balm.

  • Insect repellent.

  • Sunglasses with UV filter.

  • Small backpack (max. 20L) for hikes and day trips.

  • Lightweight, quick-drying towel.
