Day 1 - Santa Marta to Altos de la Sierra Hostel
The day starts with your pickup at your place of lodging in Santa Marta between 6:00 am and 6:30 am or meeting in the main area of Minca between 6:40am and 7:00 am.
You will be driven to the restaurant by car Tagua Lookout At kilometer 22, near the village of La Tagua—a cool, mountainous area—you'll enjoy a local breakfast accompanied by fresh air and the first rays of the rising sun as the day begins.
Once we’re ready, we’ll begin the hike, which is approximately 8.20 kilometers long and is divided into two sections: 2 km will be along the main road, offering views of coffee plantations and farms in the distance. Next, we’ll take a detour along trails surrounded by cloud forest and open landscapes, which will gradually make you feel at one with the environment. Over 6.20 km of pure nature, you’ll be able to observe the animals that live there and gradually make their presence known—birds flitting and singing in the skies or among the bushes. This is a spectacle you can enjoy and capture if you bring your camera.
About the middle of the day you'll come to a finca campesina where we will have a hot Lunch, we will have space to rest and on the fall of the afternoon, a short walk to the viewpoint where you can appreciate the sunset reflected on the Ciénaga grande de Santa Marta and the stunning Caribbean Sea.
In the evening we will take a nice traditional dinner and relax in the rural accommodation (bed, mosquito net, family environment).
Day 2 | Sunrise at Cerro Kennedy and Descent to Santa Marta
On the start of the dawn (4:30am) we will go to the viewpoint of Cerro Kennedy, a journey of approximately 3 kilometers. Once we reach the summit, we'll be at an elevation of 3,100 meters above sea level which will allow us to enjoy the sunrise and the snow-capped peaks.
With your mind and camera already filled with memories from this sunrise, we’ll enjoy breakfast. After 8 a.m., we’ll continue on our way to the Vista Nieves village.
This hike will cover 18 kilometers, and the guardians of the territory will accompany you on your return home. As you descend, you’ll see a wide variety of fruit-bearing plants, such as raspberries and wild blackberries. You’ll also learn about the wax palm species found in the Sierra Nevada de Santa Marta and the different bird species that live here and use this area as "Bird Airport".
Around noon, you'll arrive at the community restaurant, where you'll enjoy a lunch made with love using local ingredients and prepared by local hands.
As the afternoon wears on, our vehicle will be waiting for us on the main road in Vereda Vista Nieves to take us back to Minca or Santa Marta.
