Experience Itinerary
🕢 Meeting and entry to Tayrona National Natural Park:
The meeting point will be in the area Main Entrance – Zaino Cañaveral at 7:30 a.m. There, you'll meet the guide who will accompany you throughout the experience, receive general instructions, and have time to organize your belongings before checking in at the park entrance.
Once the check-in process is complete, we will board the shuttle bus, which will travel approximately 6 km up to the area of Cañaveral, where our hike begins.
🥾 Start of the tour:
Before the hike begins, the guide will present the park map, explain the day's route, points of interest, first-aid stations, and available services.
The tour begins on the horseback riding trail, surrounded by tropical forest and active biological corridors. During the tour, it is important to follow the guide’s instructions to ensure a safe and responsible experience.
🌴 Reefs and the First Landscapes of Tayrona:
Halfway through the route, we'll reach the area of Reefs, where you'll find restrooms (approximate cost between $2,000 and $3,000 COP), campgrounds, and small shops where you can buy drinks, fruit, and other local products.
This is one of the first places to appreciate the park's beauty and take a short break before continuing on.
🐊 Arenilla Beach and Its Natural Riches:
Around 10:45 a.m., approximately, we'll reach the lagoon or estuary of Arenilla Beach, an ecosystem where, depending on the conditions of the day, it is possible to observe species such as the American caiman (Crocodylus acutus) and the Babilla (Caiman crocodilus fuscus), both of which are of great importance for the conservation of Tayrona National Natural Park.
In addition to its long white-sand beach, this area marks the beginning of the natural breakwater formation that characterizes this part of the coast.
🌊 La Piscina Beach:
Just a few minutes from Arenilla is The Pool, one of the park's quietest beaches thanks to its natural barrier of coral and rock, which reduces the impact of the waves and supports marine life.
It's one of the best spots along the route to enjoy the ocean safely.
🏝️ Cabo San Juan del Guía:
We will continue walking for approximately 1.5 km along trails surrounded by tropical forest until reaching Cape San Juan del Guía, one of the most iconic sites in Tayrona Park.
Here you'll have time to enjoy the beach and climb up to the lookout point with a panoramic view of 360°, relax and have lunch at the restaurant in the area (not included). You'll also find freshwater showers and other amenities for visitors.
Since the restaurant tends to reach full capacity during the day, we recommend enjoying the beach first and then having lunch when it's less crowded.
🌅 Return to the Zaino sector:
About the 3:00 p.m. We will begin our return trip to the Cañaveral parking lot to board the shuttle again, which will take us to the park exit.
On the walk back, the afternoon light transforms the tropical forest, offering a different perspective on the landscape and an excellent opportunity to continue observing Tayrona’s biodiversity.
Arrival in the sector Zaino Cañaveral is scheduled for between 5:00 and 5:30 p.m., approximately.

How much walking is involved on the tour?
Is the tour suitable for children?
Yes, the tour to Cabo San Juan is suitable for children if they are 5 to 6 years old.
For young children, the hike can be very tiring. An ideal alternative for families is to take the boat service (round trip or return only) to spare them the fatigue or the horseback ride.
Can I swim at all the beaches?
In Tayrona Park You can't swim at all the beaches due to strong currents. On the trail from the entrance to El Zaino to Cabo San Juan, swimming is only allowed in Arenillas Beach and in The Pool, whereas Arrecifes Beach It is dangerous and prohibited.
- Arrecifes Beach: It's the first big beach you come across, but it has treacherous currents and strong waves. Swimming is prohibited here, although it's a very beautiful place to walk.
- Arenillas Beach: Located just past Arrecifes, it is a small, quiet beach, perfect for cooling off.
- The Pool: Just a few minutes from Arenillas, this is the best beach for swimming. It's protected by a barrier of rock formations that creates a natural pool, perfect for relaxing and snorkeling.
- Cabo San Juan: When you arrive, you can go for a swim in the two main bays surrounding the famous lookout point
What happens if it rains?
- Flash floods: The rivers and streams you must cross on the trails can rise rapidly, posing a deadly danger.
- Mud and slippery trails: The hike becomes more strenuous and technical, increasing the risk of falls.
- Temporary closures: National Natural Parks may restrict access to certain areas or trails due to damage to infrastructure or to protect wildlife.
- Do not cross swollen rivers: If you come across a tributary with a strong, murky current, don't try to cross it. Wait for the water level to go down or ask the guides.
- Protect Yourself: Take shelter at campgrounds or local restaurants to stay safe from possible thunderstorms.
- Check the trail conditions: Please contact the Tayrona Concession staff before starting your hikes to find out which areas are open.
- Take care of your shoes and gear: Wear hiking boots or shoes with excellent traction, and keep your valuables and documents in waterproof bags inside your backpack.

- Luggage storage service: Most hostels, hotels, and travel agencies located in Santa Marta, Palomino, or near the El Zaino Post They offer luggage storage for a very low fee (or for free if you're staying there) so you can leave your large suitcase there.
- Avoid excess: If you're traveling with a lot of luggage, don't worry. At the main campgrounds, such as Cabo San Juan, there are lockers (lockers) where you can safely store your luggage while you stroll along the beaches.
